US boosts drone surveillance as flesh-eating screwworms spread in Texas

12 August 2026 at 19:40

Hundreds of US government drones have switched from border surveillance to a different surveillance mission this summerโ€”looking for signs of screwworm infestations in wild animals and livestock herds.

The flesh-eating New World Screwworm is the parasitic larva that emerges from eggs laid by flies in the open wounds or body openings of warm-blooded animals and humans, with untreated cases potentially leading to severe injury or death. The American Academy of Pediatricsโ€”which called the order "not only disheartening but dangerous"โ€”is leading a lawsuit against previous changes to federal childhood vaccine recommendations under Trump and Kennedy. In March, the organization, along with other medical groups, won a temporary injunction reversing most of the changes.

However, less expected among the scorn for Trump's order is the immediate pushback from the pharmaceutical industry.
